This trek in the Annapurna sanctuary in Nepal is one of the world’s finest treks, taking us through scenic villages, rich oak, bamboo and rhododendron forests and is a great introduction to the joys of high altitude trekking. We climb steadily through beautiful villages with neatly terraced rice fields enjoying several days of pleasant ridge-walking through a mix of abundant forest and scattered fields, with spectacular views of the majestic Annapurna range throughout.

Our journey begins in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Next morning flight to Pokhara & then drive to the road head at Phedi from where we start with a short trek to Dhampus. We stay overnight in comfortable tea houses throughout. We spend the next four days trekking upwards through a series of forested ridges with sharp descents to the rivers between them, until we reach the Machapuchare Base Camp (3700m). From here it is only a short climb further to the Annapurna Base Camp (4130m) our ultimate destination.

Please Note: Starting 2024, on all Nepal treks, you can buy your own food at tea-houses and hence it is not a part of our package. The pricing too reflects this change in offering.

Itinerary

Show Detailed Itinerary
We fly to Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and transfer to our hotel. We get time to explore the city and visit some of its famous temples as well as do some shopping. Overnight at hotel.
After an early morning breakfast, we fly to Pokhara and then drive on to the road head at Phedi. From here, we start the trek with a steep climb to Dhampus. We can see all the Annapurna Massif and Machhapuchhre as well as Dhaulagiri I from here. Overnight at tea-house.
From Dhampus the initial walk is steep uphill till we reach to Pothana through rhododendron and Orchid forest. We will arrive Landruk at 1646m with the walking hours of around 05hrs which lies on the east canyon wall above the Modi river. From Landruk, the views of Annapurna south (7219m) and Hiunchuli (6441m) are amazing. Overnight at tea-house.
After breakfast we will descend to Kimru river and then there is big ascend to Village Chhomrong through village Jhenu Danda. The trail joins later with the main route from Ghandruk so the trail is wider. This Gurung village can be categorized in three distinct parts: upper, lower and middle spread out over 200m of elevation difference. Overnight at tea-house.
The day starts with a steep descent down some stone steps to the Chhomrong Khola which we cross by a suspension bridge. There follows an undulating climb through terraced fields and bamboo and rhododendron forests to Sunawa. After several ascents and descents we reach the abandoned check post at Kuldi. Another steep descent on slippery stone steps through dense bamboo forests to reach the aptly named settlement of Bamboo. After Bamboo, the trail climbs gradually to reach Doban. Overnight at tea-house.
We continue the trek through lush forests, going past the Hinku Cave. Beyond Deorali, the valley narrows even further as we approach the gushing torrent of Modi Khola. After walking on a level trail for some time we make the final ascent to MBC. Here we have some opportunities to take pictures of the spectacular Annapurna I and II, Gangapurna and, of course, Machapuchare. Overnight at tea-house.
This is an easy day as we make a short ascent to the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC). It’s a pleasant walk along a stream beside the moraine. The views become more and more impressive as we approach the ABC and once there, we find ourselves in a giant natural amphitheatre, surrounded by mighty 7,000m+ mountains on all sides. Overnight at tea-house.
We now leave Annapurna Base camp and retrace our steps back to the Doban village. As we are going downhill most of the way the walk takes less time although it can be hard on the knees! Overnight at tea-house.
We continue to retrace our steps as we return to Chhomrong, from where instead of going to Tadapani we descend to Jhinu. The natural hot springs at Jhinu are a brilliant remedy for sore and aching muscles. Then we drive to Pokahara.Ovenight at Hotel
We get up early to catch the morning flight to Kathmandu from where we take the connecting flight to Delhi.

What to expect

A trip graded as a Moderate Trek takes you to high altitude regions - above 3000m / 10,0000ft and will involve considerable altitude gain over the course of the trek. Altitude will have an effect, hence one would need to be careful about acclimatization. Moderate treks will have multiple days which involve considerable amount of ascents and descents and would require walking for more than 6 hours. There might be a day or two of camping in relatively high altitudes above 4000m / 13,000ft. A typical trek will last around a week to ten days depending on the region and is a good step-up for people who have completed a beginner trek.

Good fitness level is very much needed to enjoy this trip. Some training up before the trip would help. Prior trekking experience is desirable.
