Following the ancient high-level route between Paro and Thimpu, the Druk Path is a simply excellent short trek which goes past several remote lakes. The first day's walk leads to the ruined Jeli Dzong which sits on a high ridge above the Paro valley and commands breathtaking views across to Chomolhari. During the succeeding 4 days of trekking, we climb above the tree-line and cross several passes, including the Phume La (4210m). En route, we camp beside clear mountain lakes, visit yak herders' encampments and enjoy splendid panoramas of the peaks on the border withTibet, including Jitchu Drake and Gangkar Puensum. Also included is the chance to hike to Taktsang Monastery in the Paro Valley. This popular trip provides a taste of the unique and fascinating culture of Bhutan. Although it is a short trek, it still goes to a high altitude making it moderately strenuous.

Show Detailed Itinerary
Arrive Paro International Airport by Druk Air. During the flight, one will experience breathtaking views of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga and other famous Himalayan peaks, including the sacred Chomolhari and Mount Jitchu Drake in Bhutan. Overnight at hotel.
After breakfast at hotel, start for Taksakha and hike to Taktshang monastery and spend a full day hiking to Taktshang monastery, 'the tiger’s nest'. This magical monastery clings to a vertical granite cliff 4000 ft. above the valley floor. Overnight at hotel.
The first day is a long climb as you gain more than 1000m of elevation. The trek follows a gravel road past a few farms for about 30 minutes and then climbs steeply up a ridge on the first of many shortcuts that avoid road switchbacks, passing Kuenga Lhakhang at 2640m. Overnight at Camp.
This is a short day, which allows time to visit Jili Dzong, atop a promontory at 3570m. From the Dzong the route begins with a long ridge walk, first climbing on the west side of the ridge in a rhododendron forest to a saddle at 3550m, then descending through a forest of trees ravaged by bark beetles. Overnight at Camp.
The normal route descends from Tsokarm through a forest to the foot of valley and crosses the upper part of the Bemang Rong Chu, the only stream at 3540m. The trail then climbs through the forest and finally makes a steep ascent through large rocks and dwarf rhododendrons to a crest before traversing a short distance to Jimilang Tsho, an isolated lake at 3870m. Overnight at Camp.
The trail climbs from the lower end of the lake to a ridge at 4010m, traversing along the side of the ridge. We climb from the ridge to a crest at 4050m which overlooks the lake of Jayene Tsho. Descend to a yak herder’s camp near the lake and walk along the shore at 3950m before climbing to a ridge at 4150m and descending to some stone ruins and camp spot at 4040m overlooking the lake of Simkota Tsho. Overnight at Camp.
It is another long climb past several false summits, then a long rocky traverse to a group of cairns atop Phume La at 4210m. From Phajoding the trails lead though a forest descending to the road head at Motithang. Ovenight at hotel.
We drive to Paro Airport to catch our international flight back home. Trip ends!

What to expect

A trip graded as a Moderate Trek takes you to high altitude regions - above 3000m / 10,0000ft and will involve considerable altitude gain over the course of the trek. Altitude will have an effect, hence one would need to be careful about acclimatization. Moderate treks will have multiple days which involve considerable amount of ascents and descents  and would require walking for more than 6 hours. There might be a day or two of camping in relatively high altitudes above 4000m / 13,000ft. A typical trek will last around a week to ten days depending on the region and is a good step-up for people who have completed a beginner trek.
