Lobuche East is a 6119m high mountain in the Khumbu Valley. It's one of the three most popular trekking peaks in Nepal, Island Peak and Mera Peak being the other two. It lies in the heart of the Khumbu valley and the summit offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks - Everest, Cho-Oyu, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Ama-Dablam and many others. Many teams climbing Everest, climb this mountain first to train & acclimatise.

We approach the base camp via Gokyo Lakes which makes the whole Khumbu experience complete, as well as provides better acclimatisation as climbers get an opportunity to climb Gokyo Ri (5438) as well as Cho La (5420m) before reaching Base Camp.

It is classified as a "trekking peak", the term in itself is a bit of a misnomer. "Non-expedition Peaks" might be a better way to describe these kinds of climbs. The climb from the Base Camp to the summit and back is done in one long day/ night and does not involve setting up multiple camps above Base Camp (Expedition style). The summit climb however, involves mixed climbing (rock, snow and ice) on moderately steep & exposed slopes and is a superb challenge for beginners as well as experienced climbers. Most climbing is on fixed ropes and involves use of crampons, ice-axes and ascenders and descenders. Participants are expected to be in good physical shape and have basic mountaineering experience. We will quickly brush up on the mountaineering skills required for the climb but we expect everyone to be familiar with usage of mountaineering equipment and techniques like abseiling (rappelling) and use of ascenders for fixed rope climbing.

Itinerary

Show Detailed Itinerary
Fly to Kathmandu and transfer to Hotel. Day spent relaxing.
We will make an early morning start (2/3am) for the journey to the Ramechhap airport (also known as Manthali airport). A 4 to 5 hour drive through the Nepali countryside crossing the beautiful towns of Dhulikhel, Mulkot and Khurkot brings us Ramechaap, a small town on the banks of Tamakoshi river. The flight takes 20mins to reach Lukla from Ramechaap. Upon reaching Lukla we start our trek to Phakding, our destination for the night. The trekking trail from Lukla descends to Tharo Koshi, a small settlement by a smll stream. Then, you trek to Phakding (2804 meters) on an gradual uphill trail. Overnight at lodge.
We continue up the Dud Kosi Valley on the west bank and cross high suspension bridges to enter the Sagarmatha National Park at Jorsale. The trail is steep till Namche Bazaar with its very colorful Saturday market. You get first views of Mt. Everest on the trial. This is the Sherpa Heartland.
Free day to rest and acclimatise
The day starts with a climb up from the Namche bazaar and later crossing the Tenzing Norgey Memorial stupa, flattens before reaching Kyangjuma , a small village offering spectacular views of Thamserku (6808m) , Katenga (6685m), Ama Dablam (6856m) and Everest (8848m). As we leave Kyangjuma the trail gradually rises up leading us up to Mongla, a small collection of tea houses with breathtaking views of snow capped peaks all around. Overnight at lodge.
Today after breakfast we descend down toward the Dudh Kosi and later follow the river towards its source. The trail gradually gains altitude and is more isolated often passing through rich section of birch, fir and rhododendron forests, leading us to a small place with few tea houses, Dole. Magnificent views of Kantega (6685m) and Thamserku (6808m) are on offer from this small yet wonderful place. Overnight at lodge.
The trail starts with a steep uphill climb from Dole to Lahframa (4220m) and further to Luza (4360m), from Luza the trail gets easier passing through many small villages and summer settlements of the villagers. Once again following the valley high above the Dudh Kosi towards it source we come across a small settlement of few tea houses known as Machhermo, our destination for the day. Overnight at lodge.
Today’s trail follows a climb from Machhermo. After reaching Phangka (4480m) the valley widens and we have to descend towards the river before climbing the steep trail that leads us to the terminal moraine of the Ngozamba glacier. After climbing up the moraine for few minutes we are welcomed by an old iron bridge that marks our entry to the Gokyo lake valley. A gentle trail leads us to the first lake of the valley, Longpongo. At a small distance lies the second lake Taboche tso, connected through a stream to the Dudh Pokhri, the third lake and on the bank of the lake lies Gokyo a small village and our destination for today. Overnight at lodge.
On our final day's trekking we follow the Dudh Kosi and come down to Lukla. We make the most of this last evening by having a farewell party with the support staff, the porters and the Sherpa Guides. We try some local drinks like chang and dance with sherpas and ponder upon the unforgettable trekking experience of past few days.
Early morning we take the flight to Kathmandu and drive back to the Hotel. Evening free for sightseeing or shopping in the bazaar. Overnight at hotel.
Our Nepalese support team will drop you to the airport for your flight from Kathmandu to home. (Or you can stay longer for short tours such as Tibet tours, rafting, game drive at National parks and mountain biking, etc).

What to expect

On a Technical Trek the average day could involve more than 7 hrs of walking.  These trips might cover difficult and glaciated terrain where use of ropes and technical mountaineering equipment like crampons, harness, carabiners, descenders etc could come into play. On these trips one is required to stay at high altitudes for lengthy periods of time and hence  acclimatization is always a big concern. These treks can also throw a bit of surprise largely because of unpredictable nature of the terrain and the snow/ ice conditions in the high mountains and hence we always have a contingency day of two built into the plan.

These trips would last more than two weeks and go to wild, remote places completely cut off from civilization. Trekking peaks also come under the same category as the level of technicality required to climb a trekking peak is similar.

Internal Flights: Please note that poor weather can cause delays on the flights on Kathmandu-Lukla sector. At the end of the trip you should book the afternoon flights out from Kathmandu which gives you a day against delay on the flight back from Lukla. Helicopters can sometimes fly when the scheduled fixed wing aircraft cannot. If your group is offered the opportunity to use a chartered helicopter, either flying up to Lukla or back to Kathmandu, the cost will be shared between those choosing to take this option. In the extremely unlikely event that flight cancellations cause you to miss your homeward international flight, we will render all assistance, but cannot be held liable for any extra costs incurred. You could explore having an insurance for your flight cancellations.
