Friendship Peak, a spectacular mountain standing at an elevation of 5289m, is a part of the Pir Panjal range, in Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh. Facing several other peaks like Hanuman Tibba, Shitidhar, Indrasan and Deo Tibba, the summit of this peak offers spectacular panoramic views of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges with the Beas Kund basin enhancing the beauty of the panorama. Climbing Friendship does not require any prior training & experience in mountaineering although the climb to the summit is quite steep on ice and snow and also requires use of crampons and ropes at certain points. Good fitness level & some trekking experience is essential to be able to join this climb.

Itinerary

Show Detailed Itinerary
The journey starts with boarding the overnight Volvo from Himanchal Bhawan near Mandi house in Delhi. The departure time of the bus is generally between 5:00pm to 6:30 pm so all the participants are expected to report by 5:00 pm at Himanchal Bhawan. Overnight Bus.
An hour’s drive from the bus station takes us to Solang which is home to some of the best skiing slopes in India, is the starting point of many treks in Himachal Pradesh. All participants are expected to reach Manali on their own. Ways to reach Manali

1- Fly to Bhuntar airport, Kullu and taxi to Manali (1.5hrs). This flight operates Mo, Tu, Th, Sa

2- Fly to Chandigarh and taxi to Manali (10-12hrs). You can break journey at Mandi

3- Overnight Volvo coach from Delhi or Chandigarh (will be operational again after lockdown from 1st Oct 2020). We recommend coaches run by HP Tourism only.

A short trek following the Beas River through green meadows and the forest of Pine, Maple, Walnut, Silver fir and Oak, leads us to our camp at the meadows of Dhundi. On a clear day we get magnificent view of Hanuman Tibba 5950m, Deo Tibba 6001m & Indra Asan 6100m.
We expect to have snow on the mountains from this camp onwards. A half day training on use of the mountaineering equipment helps us spend some time on refreshing the skills at a moderately low altitude. This also helps overall acclimatisation of the climbers.
We start walking on the trail following the river upstream towards the river base. We cross the river through a makeshift log bridge below the snout of the river and then a steep ascent through lateral moraine leads us to the base of the peak.
We take a day off to rest and get used to the altitude as we prepare for our ferry the next day.
We make a load ferry to Advance Base Camp (3900m) and return to base camp. This rotation serves us very well for our acclimatization before gaining further height. Overnight camp at BC.
We make the move from base camp and shift to advance base camp. This would be an alpine camp in snow. Meals would be cooked either in the guide tent or a makeshift shelter. After an early dinner we get some hours sleep before setting off for the summit. Overnight Camp at ABC
Summit Day! We start early AM for our summit attempt of the Friendship Peak. The initial climb could be through scree and moraine in the fall season, but in the spring season there would be deep snow all the way up from Base Camp. After a couple of hours the climb gets steeper and we normally go roped up in this section. The sun comes up by the time we reach the col below the summit which gives us a good opportunity to get some rest, hydrate and get some snack before we make the final push to the summit. The summit rewards us with spectacular panoramic views of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges. After getting the customary pictures at the summit, we descend to ABC where we get some food and water and then wrap up the camp to descend further to the comforts of the Base Camp. This is a long and exhaustive day which could take 10-12 hrs.
A contingency day for bad weather or unforeseen circumstances.
After breakfast we descend to Solang village and then drive to the comforts of a hotel in Manali. People departing by overnight coaches will be dropped to the bus station in time to board their buses.
People coming back by overnight Volvo reach Delhi by 7-9 AM. People staying back in Manali can make their return plans as per their preferred mode

1- Taxi to Bhuntar airport, Kullu (1.5hrs) fly to Delhi and taxi to Manali. This flight operates Mo, Tu, Th, Sa

2- Taxi to Chandigarh (10-12hrs), fly onwards. If the flight is early in the day, you can spend a night in Chandigarh. Fort Nalagarh (70 kms from the airport) is a good option if you would like to spend another night away from the cities.

What to expect

On a Technical Trek the average day could involve more than 7 hrs of walking.  These trips might cover difficult and glaciated terrain where use of ropes and technical mountaineering equipment like crampons, harness, carabiners, descenders etc could come into play. On these trips one is required to stay at high altitudes for lengthy periods of time and hence  acclimatization is always a big concern. These treks can also throw a bit of surprise largely because of unpredictable nature of the terrain and the snow/ ice conditions in the high mountains and hence we always have a contingency day of two built into the plan.

These trips would last more than two weeks and go to wild, remote places completely cut off from civilization. Trekking peaks also come under the same category as the level of technicality required to climb a trekking peak is similar.
