Straddling the districts of Garhwal and Kumaon, close to the Nepalese border, Nanda Devi (7817m./25640ft.) is the geographical and spiritual high point of India. Trekking west from the valley of the Ram Ganga to reach the Gauri Ganga in the east, our route is rich in interest, passing through a delightfully scenic and unspoiled corner of the Indian Himalaya. Traversing alpine meadows and crossing high passes, we have panoramic views of the clustered peaks of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary and the adjacent Panch Chuli group. Visits to several villages and shepherds’ camps provide a wealth of cultural interest and help to make this a wholly memorable adventure in an area visited by few trekkers.

Show Detailed Itinerary
Board the morning Shatabdi from New Delhi Railway Station (6:20hrs) to reach Kathgodam (11:55hrs). We board the waiting vehicles and drive to Kausani. We cross the beautiful towns of Bhimtal and Almora. Kausani is small town which offers some great panormaic views of the Kumaon Himalaya, with Nanda Devi & Trishul dominating the skyline on the North.
Drive to Supi via Bageshwar which can be used for any last minute shopping too. The trek to Mikila is a delightful one, passing through some small settlements. The villages are well kept and one can see terrace fields. Crossing the bridge, the path climbs steeply through a village. We stay on the main path on the south side of the valley, opposite the village of Mikila. The campsite is an ideal one on a small meadow just before the real forest. One can go for a walk to the nearby village of Mikila. Overnight Camp
The trial continues to the south side of the valley climbing steeply through the forest and small meadows. Climbing through the rhododendron forest, the trail opens in a meadow. From here one can choose to take an offbeat trail for the better views of the Nandadevi, Nandadevi East, Nandakot and later cross the pass on the ridge (3050mts). It’s a steep descent to an idyllic campsite in a forest clearing. Overnight Camp
From the camp, it is about 950mts descent to the banks of Ram Ganga. The trail contours through the forest with few ups & downs till the village Gogina. One can see the route ahead over the next few days & the high peaks of Kumaon. This spot is ideal for having lunch (depending on your start) before steep ascent to Namik. The campsite is above Namik village (160mts) is yet another superb campsite overlooking the Ramganga. Overnight Camp
The trail is steep in the beginning crossing many streams. We follow a nice trail through the rhododendron bushes before coming at a tri junction of trails. From here we take the left one and continue on the same trail before we head to steep path which leads to Thaltok – Trekkers hut. The campsite offers nice views of the high Himalayas. Overnight Camp
Climb up to the Sudamkhan ridge to get the best views of the trip. To the top we traverse the ridge, heading northwards we climb around 300mts to reach the crest of the ridge. The views of the Panchachulli are stunning. To the west we can see Nandadevi, Dangthal, Nandadevi East. The trail continues along the ridge sometimes along the crest and sometimes contouring across its western slopes. On the return we follow the same trail till the tri junction (much further to Thaltok) and then crossing the small pass we head to another valley. It is steep descent in the beginning but later the trail is gentle with many shepherds’ settlements. After crossing the Junga river we climb another 100mts for our campsite. Not so flat but good enough with water point nearby. Overnight Camp
It is very steep ascent but a great place for bird watchers through Rhododendron bushes. The trail zig zags to never ending pass (3450mts) which offers stunning views of the Panchachulli and of the Gori Ganga valley. Dropping down from the pass, we reach a shepherd’ hut in an open area which offers great mountain views especially at sunset. Overnight Camp
The trail is gentle through the forest and contouring across the hillside in the direction of Munsiyari. It is very pleasant walk with ever changing panoramas, as we descend through the forest and traverse open slopes when finally we stop for lunch near the wall. From here we can see the Munsiyari town. After lunch the trail is steep down till Munsiyari. Overnight Guest House
Have an early start and drive back via Almora to Bhimtal. Enjoy the peace at the lakeside town of Bhimtal.
Early morning transfer to Kathgodam to board the train back to Delhi. Trip ends at Kathgodam.

What to expect

A trip graded as a Moderate Trek takes you to high altitude regions - above 3000m / 10,0000ft and will involve considerable altitude gain over the course of the trek. Altitude will have an effect, hence one would need to be careful about acclimatization. Moderate treks will have multiple days which involve considerable amount of ascents and descents  and would require walking for more than 6 hours. There might be a day or two of camping in relatively high altitudes above 4000m / 13,000ft. A typical trek will last around a week to ten days depending on the region and is a good step-up for people who have completed a beginner trek.

Good fitness levels are needed to enjoy these trips. Some training up before the trip would help. Prior trekking experience is desirable.
