Mera Peak (6461m) is the highest trekking peak in Nepal and lies south of Everest. Mera Peak summit would probably be the finest viewpoint in Nepal as it offers a panoramic view of five 8000m peaks - Kangchenjunga, Makalu, Lhotse, Everest, and Cho Oyu. We approach the mountain through an easy-paced route which gives us enough time to acclimatise. We fly to Phaplu and then trek through small villages to cross the Pangkongma La (3174m) pass and enter the forested & uninhabited Hinku valley. This region offers pure wilderness with many glacial lakes and spectacular peaks including 7000m mountains like Baruntse & Chamlang. We stay in tea-houses till Khare & will have tents at Base Camp & High Camp. The climb is straightforward and not technically difficult. Acclimatising to high altitude is the key to success on this trip. The itinerary is well thought out & offers enough time for acclimatization at different stages.  This climb is a great option for someone who is looking at scaling a first Himalayan summit

Itinerary

Show Detailed Itinerary
We take an early morning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla . It's a 25-minute flight. After having a short tea break at Lukla we start to decscend to a place called Surke where we stop for lunch. We then gradually go up to the small village of Paiya . We end the day in Paiya Village (2800m)
Today, we leave behind the Everest Trail and move towards the south-east, following a straight and zig-zag trail gradually gaining altitude and reaching close to Lenjikharka. We end the day in the village of Pangkongma (2850m).
A nice day for trekking which starts with the ascend to Pangkongma La (3174m) separating the valleys of the Dudh Kosi and Hinku Khola. We get our first glance of Mera Peak and then we do a steep descent to the village of Sibuje (2770 m). From here we head on a nice trail through forests to the valley to Ning So (2850m), where we stay the night.
The day begins with a steep climb up to 3280m, where we stop for tea and enjoy the amazing view. We then ascend further to up 3350m and do a steep descent and take a break for lunch along the river. Post lunch, the trail has ups and downs going through forests. At the end of the day, we cross a unique bridge made from a huge tree trunk to reach our halt for the night at 'Jungle Camp' (3160m).
Today we head north and follow the Hinku Khola through the forest with the trail going up and down. We traverse the side valley and gain elevation through the day. By the end, we reach a bouldery area known as Khotey at an altitude of 3600m in the Hinku Valley. This place has several shops and tea houses that are operational only in the climbing season.
We continue by the riverbed upwards the valley to reach Tangnag.
An enjoyable hike up trail continues to Khare where will set up camp, a little below the Mera Glacier.
You climb through rocky patches before you hit the glacier where we rope up. Bit of climbing through the glacier and snowslopes gets you to the top of Mera La. We descend 100m from the pass where we set up our Base Camp
Half a day hike up on relatively easy snow slopes to high camp, all the time being watchful of the crevasses.
Climbing above summit camp you see the Mera north and central towering afar on the other end of a vast snowfield. We climb through the snowfields to reach a ridge after which you climb a steep section to the summit of Mera central. This last 50m snow slope will have fixed rope for which you will use ascenders. Once on the summit, you will be greeted by some of the grandest views of World's highest peaks, an antidote to exhaustion, giving way to elation! We then make our way back to Khare.
We retrace our steps back towards lukla.
Onward to your next destination. Trip ends!

What to expect

A moderate climbing expedition to a peak above 6000m. These climbs generally have a short approach march and a challenging summit day which is attempted from a base camp or an advance base camp. The climb will require basic climbing skills and would involve being roped up on glacial terrain and climbing with mountaineering boots and crampons in excess  of 10hours on the summit night. Some climbs even require you to climb on fixed ropes with an ascender on steep terrain. The level of difficulty both physically and technically is a notch above a trekking peak.

Internal Flights: Please note that poor weather can cause delays on the flights on Kathmandu-Lukla sector. At the end of the trip you should book the afternoon flights out from Kathmandu which gives you a day against delay on the flight back from Lukla. Helicopters can sometimes fly when the scheduled fixed wing aircraft cannot. If your group is offered the opportunity to use a chartered helicopter, either flying up to Lukla or back to Kathmandu, the cost will be shared between those choosing to take this option. In the extremely unlikely event that flight cancellations cause you to miss your homeward international flight, we will render all assistance, but cannot be held liable for any extra costs incurred. You could explore having an insurance for your flight cancellations.
