Tucked away in the vast high-altitude landscape of Ladakh’s Markha Valley, Dzo Jongo East (6,220m) is one of the Himalaya’s most rewarding introductory mountaineering objectives. Rising above the grazing meadows of Nimaling, and located under the shadow of the more famous Kang Yatse massif, this elegant 6000-metre peak offers an experience that feels wild, remote, and deeply Himalayan without the highly technical nature of larger expedition climbs. Often described as a trekking peak, Dzo Jongo East climb ascends through Ladakh’s stark cold-desert terrain, crossing moraine slopes, alpine ridges, and broad summit shoulders before culminating in a spectacular panoramic summit with views stretching across the Karakoram Range, the Zanskar mountains, and the endless ridgelines of eastern Ladakh. What makes the mountain especially appealing is the balance it strikes between accessibility and genuine high-altitude adventure. Quieter than many of the Himalaya’s more commercialised climbs, Dzo Jongo East offers a more immersive and rewarding experience in the mountains while remaining achievable for fit trekkers looking to take their first step into mountaineering. It wouldn't be stretch to call Dzo Jongo East one of the easiest 6000m mountains in the world!

Itinerary

Show Detailed Itinerary
The flight takes us over the Greater Himalayas and makes an exciting landing at one of the highest airports in the world. Transfer to hotel. Overnight at hotel.
Visit the famous monasteries of Shey & Thiksey. Shey used to be the old capital of Ladakh. Thiksey is a beautiful monastery built in the style of the Potala Palace in Tibet. Drive back to hotel for lunch. You can spend time checking out the charming Leh Town and its narrow by-lanes in the evening.
This is one of the most spectacular drives in Ladakh, from Leh we start driving down on the Srinagar Leh Highway, crossing the famous Magnetic Hill and Patthar Sahib Gurudwara on the way to the confluence of Indus and Zanskar. From the Confluence we take the road going into the Zanskar Gorge to reach Thinlespa, the starting point of our trek. The trail goes through a flat and desolate plain along the river Markha and swings into the mountains along the pretty, willow-lined small settlements. We trek for an hour to the picturesque village of Markha where we set up camp for the night.
We continue our walk along the Markha river today where we see interesting rock formations on either side of the Valley. We also get our first glimpse of the snow capped Kang Yatze massif today as we walk past the lower Hankar village which is lush with greenery and in the summer season, filled with colourful flowers. Overnight Camp
Kang Yatse (6400m), a magnificent snow-clad mountain commands the views for the next two days. On the walk there are sights of some fascinating geological creations of large boulders balanced precariously on top of consolidated earth spikes. Continue down over a bridge to Thachungtse, a lovely valley to camp in. A popular place to spot herds of blue sheep slide up and down the steep cliffs with incredible agility. Overnight Camp.
You pass several mani (stones with prayer inscriptions) walls and suddenly come across a small lake. The view is wonderful from here - both of Kang Yatse, whose bulk gets reflected in the still waters of the lake, and also of the Markha Valley which we are now well above. Overnight Camp.
A buffer day for bad weather/ ill health etc.
We pack camp and proceed to the grazing grounds of Nimaling. From there it is a gradual ascent to Kongmaru La pass at 5260m with prayer flags fluttering. Beautiful views all round from the pass. We descend steeply at first before it becomes gradually as we reach the stream. A little ahead Chuskirmo with chortens and a small shop. We normally stop here for lunch before finishing the trek 30 minutes further and driving down to Leh
Early morning transfer to the airport to fly back home. Trip Ends!.
