MAX ALTITUDEMatho is one of the prominent villages on the northern bank of the Indus, housing the Matho Monastery which has a rich history in Tibetan Buddhism. In fact, Matho and Skidmang in eastern Ladakh (130km to the east of Leh) are the only example in Ladakh of the Sakyapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. We go through the Matho valley climbing up gently and climbing to the pass named after the village to the right of the valley. This region is not as frequented by trekkers as the neighbouring Markha valley. The geography of this area is quite unique - you have rolling grasslands on one side and high rocky cliffs on the other. It is beautiful to see the transition happen and the two different types of mountains meet each other abruptly. In the background, you have the high snow-clad peaks - the Matho Kangri, the Golep Kangri & the Stok Kangri. The slopes dotted by grazing sheep add to the whole experience. After crossing the pass we get down to the Stok Valley and exit out of Stok village.

Any trip rated as a 'Beginner Trek' is an ideal first step into the world of trekking in the Himalaya. The trips are short - generally under a week - in moderate altitudes with gradual altitude gain. A typical day will involve 4-5hrs of hiking on mountainous trails with an odd day over 6hrs. Most beginner treks in the Indian Himalaya are camping trips where overnight accommodation will be in tents. You will be accompanied by our camping and kitchen staff throughout the trip.
Since this trek lies in Ladakh (an extension of the high altitude plateau of Tibet) we have to be careful about acclimatisation. The effects of altitude can easily be felt on landing in Leh itself and all trekkers need to be watchful of it. The trek is paced such that you acclimatize well and move up gradually through altitude. On the trail you may feel breathlessness or nausea. It is extremely important to take it easy and not to exert too much. Drinking lots of water/fluids, good food, adequate rest and positive attitude helps the body in acclimatizing better at high altitudes. It is good to know about high altitude and coping measures on the mountain.
This trek suits individuals or families looking for their maiden trek in the Himalayas or people looking to experience stunning Himalayan landscape in a remote region in quick time.
