One of the rarely done wild trek in the Himalayan region we witness a stunning pass largely untouched by trekkers. The trail to Kalihani pass starts from Manali and goes through forests, lush green mountains and ample snow slopes all the while giving spectacular views of Kullu valley and the mountain peaks standing above them. From the top of the pass you witness the breath-taking Kalihani glacier which feeds one of the major tributaries of river Ravi. The trek is a great mix of everything that the Himalayas have to offer - be it a walk in the jungle with sections having a line of rhododendron and juniper trees, vast meadows, river crossings and finally a hike up the glacier to the top of the pass. The Kalihani Pass is hence must do for all trekking enthusiasts.

The trip starts in Manali and all members are expected to reach Manali on their own. Team meeting over a cup of tea in the evening. If you arrive early, you can explore the various sights in Manali. Overnight Hotel in Manali.

Ways to reach Manali 1- Fly to Bhuntar airport, Kullu and taxi to Manali (1.5hrs). This flight operates Mo, Tu, Th, Sa 2- Fly to Chandigarh and taxi to Manali (10-12hrs). You can break journey at Mandi 3- Overnight Volvo coach from Delhi or Chandigarh (will be operational again after lockdown from 1st Oct 2020). We recommend coaches run by HP Tourism only.
We start the trek from Hadimba Temple, 2.5kms from Manali. The initial climb through dense Deodar forests is steep and soon we come to a clearing that affords us magnificent views of the town and some majestic peaks. Lamadugh is a beautiful alpine meadow and we set our camp here. Overnight at Camp
The trail ascends as we walk through the ridge below the Tanpari TIbba (4000m) and there are beautiful views of the Solang and the Rohtang valley. From here the trail descends down steeply to reach a crest over Riyali Thatch, our campsite for the night. From here it is a gradual downhill walk to the camp. Overnight at Camp
The trail to Kalihani base is beautiful from the very outset as you pass through many settlements of local Shepard's or the Gaddis. For the first couple of hours, the terrain is up & down and you cross many small streams before you hit a big stream coming from the Kalihani pass. From there the climb is steep. During the pre-monsoon you might find some snow from here onwards. The last hour to the camp is a high gradient uphill but the views of the mighty Indrasan and Deo Tibba on the other side of the valley will make it worth climb. Overnight camp.
We start very early in the morning to make the best of the snow conditions. The initial couple of hours is a steep climb after which the slopes are a bit gradual. As you go higher your views keep expanding and you get to see many high peaks of Lahaul. You will start feeling the altitude too as you go up and the climb to the top of the pass should take you around 4-5 hours. From the top the views are nothing short of paradise in front of your eyes as the vast expanse of Kalihani glacier is at the foreground of picture perfect looking peaks in the back drop. We start heading down after a brief time at the top as snow conditions gets tricky in the late afternoon. Overnight at Camp
After a long previous day in snowy trails, we start from Sanghore base and head down following the stream. After a short diversion to the right we continue on rolling terrain for the next 3 hours to reach out next campsite. Overnight at Camp
From Rangolee we start seeing the small villages below as the Beas flows in between the Kullu valley. We leave behind the green mountains to hit the treeline before we reach the campsite. Overnight at Camp
A short hike back to the road head at Baragrahn, drive down to hotel Naggar or Raison. People departing by overnight coaches will be dropped to the bus station in time to board their buses.
Trip ends after breakfast. For the return travel home you could again choose your preferred mode. 1- By Taxi to Bhuntar airport, Kullu (1.5hrs) fly to Delhi and taxi to Manali. This flight operates Mo, Tu, Th, Sa 2 - Taxi to Chandigarh (10-12hrs), fly onwards. If the flight is early in the day, you can spend a night in Chandigarh. Fort Nalagarh (70 kms from the airport) is a good option if you would like to spend another night away from the cities. 3- Overnight Volvo coach from Manali to Delhi/ Chandigarh can be boarded the previous night (will be operational again after lockdown from 1st Oct 2020). What to expect

A Challenging trek would typically last for about two weeks and will take you to altitudes above 5000m / 16,500ft. A routine day will have over 6 hours of hiking and will involve a great deal of ascending and descending on sparsely tread trails. The terrain will be varied on these treks and you can expect walking on moraines / boulder fields and cross small glaciers. Acclimatisation is a concern, the itineraries are carefully planned  and allow everyone to acclimatise to the increasing altitude. Exposure to cold temperatures is quite high on these treks, all participants are expected to have good quality equipment & clothing to enjoy these treks. A mix of wilderness, altitude, terrain and duration makes these treks challenging. The trek is Suited for people with high fitness levels looking for a challenge and capable of enduring two weeks in the outdoors.
