This trek in the Annapurna sanctuary in Nepal is one of the world’s finest treks, taking us through scenic villages, rich oak, bamboo and rhododendron forests and is a great introduction to the joys of high altitude trekking. We climb steadily through beautiful villages with neatly terraced rice fields enjoying several days of pleasant ridge-walking through a mix of abundant forest and scattered fields, with spectacular views of the majestic Annapurna range throughout. Our journey begins in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. We drive to the road head at Phedi beyond Pokhara where we start with a short trek to Dhampus. We stay overnight in comfortable tea houses throughout. We spend the next four days trekking upwards through a series of forested ridges with sharp descents to the rivers between them, until we reach the Machapuchare Base Camp (3700m). From here it is only a short climb further to the Annapurna Base Camp (4130m) our ultimate destination.

Show Detailed Itinerary
We fly in to Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and transfer to our hotel. Here, the group assembles and we meet our trek leader who gives us a thorough briefing on the trek ahead. We have time to explore the city and visit some of its famous temples as well as do some shopping. Overnight at Hotel, Kathmandu.
After an early morning breakfast, we drive to Kathmandu domestic airport to catch a flight for Pokhara and once we reach Pokhara our vehicles will take us to Tirkhedunga which takes around 3hrs drive. After lunch we have steep uphill climb up to Ulleri. It's beautiful and very spread out village. Overnight Tea-house, Ulleri.
Today is a relatively short day, as we continue our ascent and walk past the village of Nangeythanti to reach Ghorepani. This place used to be a rest stop where ancient traders found water (pani in Nepali) for their horses (ghora in Nepali), thus leading to the name Ghorepani. The village has two parts to it – one on a large saddle like hill, and the other a little further down the hillside. Overnight Tea-house, Ghorepani.
We rise early this morning, and climb up Poon Hill before breakfast, a short hike of about 45mins to an hour. Poon Hill is a very famous vantage point with spectacular views of Machhapuchhare, Dhaulagiri, Nilagiri and the mighty Annapurna range. We return for a welcome breakfast, after which we continue our trek towards Tadopani which is a relatively easy hike compared to the previous day's climb to Ghorepani. The trail winds along a ridge through pine and rhododendron forests to a crest , then drops down to Deorali. We descend steeply to reach Banthanti and then climb back up through fields of cane on an undulating path, before reaching Tadopani. Overnight Tea-house, Tadopani.
Today is a relatively easy day, as we make a long descent to Kimrung Khola, cross by the bridge and begin to climb again on the west bank of Modi Khola. Chhomrong village is located just below the ridge and has many chalet-style lodges that look out towards the prominent Machhapuchchhre peak. Overnight Tea-house, Chhomrong.
The day starts with a steep descent down some stone steps to the Chhomrong Khola which we cross by a suspension bridge. There follows an undulating climb through terraced fields and bamboo and rhododendron forests to Sunawa. After several ascents and descents we reach the abandoned check post at Kuldi. Another steep descent on slippery stone steps through dense bamboo forests to reach the aptly named settlement of Bamboo. After Bamboo, the trail climbs gradually to reach Doban. Overnight at tea-house.
We continue the trek through lush forests, going past the Hinku Cave. Beyond Deorali, the valley narrows even further as we approach the gushing torrent of Modi Khola. After walking on a level trail for some time we make the final ascent to MBC. Here we have some opportunities to take pictures of the spectacular Annapurna I and II, Gangapurna and, of course, Machapuchare. Overnight at tea-house..
This is an easy day as we make a short ascent to the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC). It’s a pleasant walk along a stream beside the moraine. The views become more and more impressive as we approach the ABC and once we reach there, we find ourselves in a giant natural amphitheater, surrounded by mighty 7,000m+ mountains on all sides. Overnight at tea-house.
After breakfast we leave Annapurna Base camp and retrace our steps back to all the way to small settlement called Bamboo. As we are going downhill the walk will surely takes less time but we need to be careful as it takes lot of toll on the knees! Overnight at tea-house.
We continue to retrace our steps till we reach Chhomrong, from where instead of going to Tadapani we descend to Jhinu. The natural hot springs at Jhinu are a brilliant remedy for sore and aching muscles. Overnight at tea-house.
After breakfast we hike down till we reach to newly built very long suspension bridge. After crossing the bridge most of the walk is gentle along river Modi. In the end we have ascent of around 45mins to village Lhandruk. It's a Gurung village which is very big and culturally very rich. Overnight Tea-house, Lhandruk.
Today's initial part of the walk is a road walk. But please don't consider this road walk as city road walk. There are lot of gradual up & downs within the road. Again we have steep uphill climb of around 45 mins (after walking on road for about 1.5 hours) till we reach Deurali and then it's downhill walk till we stop from lunch at Potana. After lunch it's again downhill walk through Rhodendron & Oak forest till we reach Dhampus. Overnight Tea House, Dhampus.
Dhampus to Phedi distance is around 3 km / 2 mile. We will descend gradually through hilly land, undulating terrain and flight of stairs for Phedi - our road head. Our vehicles will pick us up and take us to Pokhara. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure in the bustling lake city where we can pick up souvenirs for our friends and family back home. Overnight Hotel, Pokhara.
We get up early to catch the morning flight to Kathmandu from where we take the connecting flight to Delhi. Our journey comes to an end!

What to expect

A trip graded as a Moderate Trek takes you to high altitude regions - above 3000m / 10,0000ft and will involve considerable altitude gain over the course of the trek. Altitude will have an effect, hence one would need to be careful about acclimatization. Moderate treks will have multiple days which involve considerable amount of ascents and descents and would require walking for more than 6 hours. There might be a day or two of camping in relatively high altitudes above 4000m / 13,000ft. A typical trek will last around a week to ten days depending on the region and is a good step-up for people who have completed a beginner trek.

Good fitness level is very much needed to enjoy this trip. Some training up before the trip would help. Prior trekking experience is desirable.
