MAX ALTITUDEThe home of Kangchendzonga, the third highest mountain in the world, Sikkim is a small yet beautiful part of the eastern section of the Indian Himalaya. Situated between Bhutan on the east and Nepal on thee west, Sikkim is known for its rich flora and fauna, where numerous species of birds, tress and animals native to the Himalaya are still thriving. The friendly locals, with their unique blend of Tibetan and Nepali culture, make Sikkim a truly special destination to travel to. The Sikkim section of the GHT travels mostly under the shadow of Kangchendzonga, with the mountain constantly following us throughout the trail. We start the trek from Hilley, go through the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary and cross over high hill slopes and ridges to enter the Goecha La region before descending down to Labdang and finish the trip at Gangtok, the capital of the Sikkim state.
A Challenging trek would take you to altitudes above 5000m / 16,500ft. A routine day will have over 6 hours of hiking and will involve a great deal of ascending and descending on sparsely tread trails. The terrain will be varied on these treks and you can expect walking on moraines / boulder fields and cross small glaciers. Acclimatisation is a concern, the itineraries are carefully planned and allow everyone to acclimatise to the increasing altitude. Exposure to cold temperatures is quite high on these treks, all participants are expected to have good quality equipment & clothing to enjoy these treks. A mix of wilderness, altitude, terrain and duration makes these treks challenging. The trek is suited for people with high fitness levels looking for a challenge and capable of enduring multiple weeks in the outdoors.
