The trek to Satopanth Tal, cradled high above the sacred shrine at Badrinath in the Garhwal Himalaya, is a journey that blends stark alpine beauty with deep spiritual resonance. Following the course of the Alaknanda River beyond Mana - the last village on the Indian frontier - the trail gradually leaves behind signs of habitation and enters a raw, glacial landscape of moraine fields, sweeping valleys and towering peaks like Chaukhamba standing sentinel in the distance. The emerald, triangular lake of Satopanth - believed to be holy meditative ground of the Gods and divine sages of Hindusim - reveals itself quietly. The trek is known for its spiritual significance as it takes you to the source of the sacred Alakananda River - one of the major tributaries which form the Ganga - and this mesmerising lake known

We continue our journey by the Alakananda river, crossing the Karna Prayag and Nanda Prayag. We slowly gain altitude to touch Auli at 2900m where we reach our Hotel for lunch. Auli is a picturesque village with wonderful views of Himalayan peaks. In the evening, option acclimatisation walk to soak in the landscape and get your body used to altitude. Overnight Hotel
We start the drive to Mana village (3200m), our road-head for the trek and the last village of the valley. We start the walk through lush green meadows and bushes with views of Alakananda to our right. A beautiful day! We start from Lakshmivan and continue along the left side of the valley to arrive at the most picturesque part of the trek - the Sahasra Dhāra - where hundreds of tiny streams flowing down from Mt. Neelkanth cascade down a rock face. We have multiple stream crossings today but have wonderful views for company. Depending on the weather, we also get our first glimpse of Chaukambha as we reach the campsite of Chakratirtha. Overnight at Camp
We start early in the morning from camp to climb a small steep patch which brings us into a rocky moraine field - the toughest part of the trek. We navigate the moraine, hopping over rocks and boulders of various sizes and climb out of it to a point where the lake reveals itself - a stunning sight with the mighty Chaukambha peak in the background. We spend some time by the lake, before heading back down the same route to our campsite at Chakratirtha. Overnight Camp

What to expect

A trip graded as a Moderate Trek takes you to high altitude regions - above 3000m / 10,0000ft and will involve considerable altitude gain over the course of the trek. Altitude will have an effect, hence one would need to be careful about acclimatization. Moderate treks will have multiple days which involve considerable amount of ascents and descents  and would require walking for more than 6 hours. There might be a day or two of camping in relatively high altitudes above 4000m / 13,000ft. A typical trek will last around a week to ten days depending on the region and is a good step-up for people who have completed a beginner trek. Good fitness levels are needed to enjoy these trips. Some training up before the trip would help. Prior trekking experience is desirable.
