The Gokyo Ri is one of the most spectacular treks on offer in the Everest Region. Once described as “the best viewpoint in the Everest Region,” the summit of Gokyo Ri (5483m) is the highlight of this trek and offers such a panorama of the Everest region and the Gokyo lake system that easily, it is the perfect alternative to the classic Everest Base Camp trek. For those of you, who are looking to avoid the heavy traffic of the EBC route and want to feel the highest Himalayan giants closely, this is a perfect trek. On a clear day, besides the four highest mountains Cho Oyu (8153 m), Lhotse (8501m), Makalu (8475 m) and Everest (8850m) many other named and unnamed mountains contribute to the view from the summit of Gokyo Ri. The trail we follow is much more isolated than the EBC route and passes through a rich section of Himalayan flora and fauna and gives ample amount of time for acclimatization and a chance to witness the gorgeous Himalayan landscapes in their raw forms. It is not only the Gokyo Ri, its lakes and its views of the highest giants that make this trek unique but also the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier of Nepal that is the heart of this trek and the river Dudh Kosi originating from the same glacier. The flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the tea houses, Namche Bazaar, Sagarmatha National Park, etc are among other highlights of the trek along with the insight into the Sherpa culture you get walking in the heart of the Sherpa land.

Please Note: Starting 2024, on all Nepal treks, you can buy your own food at tea-houses and hence it is not a part of our package. The pricing too reflects this change in offering.

Show Detailed Itinerary
Arrive at the airport and transfer to the hotel. We are introduced to our trek guide and other members of the tour. Overnight at hotel.
We will make an early morning (2/3am) start for the journey to the Ramechhap airport (also known as Manthali airport). A 4 to 5 hour drive through the Nepali countryside crossing the beautiful towns of Dhulikhel, Mulkot and Khurkot brings us Ramechaap, a small town on the banks of Tamakoshi river. The flight takes 20mins to reach Lukla from Ramechaap. Upon reaching Lukla we start our trek to Phakding, our destination for the night. The trekking trail from Lukla descends to Tharo Koshi, a small settlement by a smll stream. Then, you trek to Phakding (2804 meters) on an gradual uphill trail. Overnight at lodge.
We start the walk following the Dudh Kosi upstream, passing through small villages and settlements where the landscape is dominated by pure pine groves. We climb for a short while to rise above the gorge and through the entrance to the Khumbu National Park. The trail is good and leads us to a confluence of rivers — one coming down from Thame and the other from Khumbu. The last leg of the trail takes us over a breathtaking suspension bridge, from where on we climb for about 90 minutes to Namche on a wide switchback trail. We also get our first view of the Mt Everest this day. Overnight at lodge.
Namche bazaar nestles between a pair of ridges amid the towering pinnacles of Khumbu. since ancient times namche has been the business centre of the Khumbu region, still keeping up its reputation as a trade and bussiness place, Namche is the most happening place in the entire trek, lined up with small cafes resturants and pubs, suvinoir and antiques shops and stores selling clothing and mountaineering gear for a small trek to a big climb. You name it and Namche has it all. It is also the perfect place to rest and acclimatize before setting out any further on the trail. One gets spectacular views of Nupla (5885 m) and Khumbila (5703m) fro almost every corner of Namche. Overnight at lodge.
The day starts with a climb up from the Namche bazaar and later crossing the Tenzing Norgey Memorial stupa, flattens before reaching Kyangjuma , a small village offering spectacular views of Thamserku (6808m) , Katenga (6685m), Ama Dablam (6856m) and Everest (8848m). As we leave Kyangjuma the trail gradually rises up leading us up to Mongla, a small collection of tea houses with breathtaking views of snow capped peaks all around. Overnight at lodge.
Today after breakfast we descend down toward the Dudh Kosi and later follow the river towards its source. The trail gradually gains altitude and is more isolated often passing through rich section of birch, fir and rhododendron forests, leading us to a small place with few tea houses, Dole. Magnificent views of Kantega (6685m) and Thamserku (6808m) are on offer from this small yet wonderful place. Overnight at lodge.
The trail starts with a steep uphill climb from Dole to Lahframa (4220m) and further to Luza (4360m), from Luza the trail gets easier passing through many small villages and summer settlements of the villagers. Once again following the valley high above the Dudh Kosi towards it source we come across a small settlement of few tea houses known as Machhermo, our destination for the day. Overnight at lodge.
Today’s trail follows a climb from Machhermo. After reaching Phangka (4480m) the valley widens and we have to descend towards the river before climbing the steep trail that leads us to the terminal moraine of the Ngozamba glacier. After climbing up the moraine for few minutes we are welcomed by an old iron bridge that marks our entry to the Gokyo lake valley. A gentle trail leads us to the first lake of the valley, Longpongo. At a small distance lies the second lake Taboche tso, connected through a stream to the Dudh Pokhri, the third lake and on the bank of the lake lies Gokyo a small village and our destination for today. Overnight at lodge.
The highlight of our trek - the Gokyo Ri stands tall across the Dudh Phokri. Early morning we follow the trail that leads up to the summit of Gokyo peak or the Gokyo Ri. It is a 2-3 hour steep climb to the top but truly rewarding. Once described as the best view point in Nepal Himalaya, the summit of the Gokyo Ri truly offers such a panorama of the mighty Himalaya that we can hardly believe we are not dreaming. Surrounding us are Kusum Kanguru (6367m), Cho Oyu (8153 m), Gyangchung Kang (7922m), Lhotse (8501m), Makalu (8475 m), Cholatse (6440m), Taweche(6542m), Kantega (6685m), Thamserku (6808m), Lobuche (6145m) and Mt Everest (8848m) and hundreds of other unnamed peaks. Later we follow our steps back towards Machhermo. Overnight at lodge.
Tracing our footsteps back on the trail we reach Dole and further following the Dudh Kosi and passing through rich sections Birch and rhododendron forests we reach Namche. The trail is mostly downhill with small uphill sections. Overnight at lodge.
We have a steep downhill walk to Monjo. From Monjo the trail descends the valley which becomes more enclosed as we pass the villages of Phakding and Chopling to reach Chaurikharaka. Here we begin the final climb of the trip -the sting in the tail- with a 45 min steady ascent up to the airstrip of Lukla. Overnight at lodge.
Early morning we take the flight to Ramechapp and later drive to Kathmandu. Evening free for sightseeing or shopping in the bazaar. Overnight at hotel.

What to expect

A Challenging trek would typically last for about two weeks and will take you to altitudes above 5000m / 16,500ft. A routine day will have over 6 hours of hiking and will involve a great deal of ascending and descending on sparsely tread trails. The terrain will be varied on these treks and you can expect walking on moraines / boulder fields and cross small glaciers. Acclimatisation is a concern, the itineraries are carefully planned and allow everyone to acclimatise to the increasing altitude. Exposure to cold temperatures is quite high on these treks, all participants are expected to have good quality equipment & clothing to enjoy these treks. A mix of wilderness, altitude, terrain and duration makes these treks challenging. Suited for people with high fitness levels looking for a challenge and capable of enduring two weeks in the outdoors.

Internal Flights: Please note that poor weather can cause delays on the flights on Kathmandu-Lukla sector. At the end of the trip you should book the afternoon flights out from Kathmandu which gives you a day against delay on the flight back from Lukla. Helicopters can sometimes fly when the scheduled fixed wing aircraft cannot. If your group is offered the opportunity to use a chartered helicopter, either flying up to Lukla or back to Kathmandu, the cost will be shared between those choosing to take this option. In the extremely unlikely event that flight cancellations cause you to miss your homeward international flight, we will render all assistance, but cannot be held liable for any extra costs incurred. You could explore having an insurance for your flight cancellations.
