This course is designed for individuals aspiring to learn the fundamental skills involved in climbing a mountain. It imparts skills necessary for safe, successful and enjoyable mountain adventures. Our training area would be Dhundi above Solang Valley. We trek up to Dhundi & make it our base camp for next four days of training. It is a great opportunity for first timers who are keen to discover the outdoors and experience the mighty Himalaya at high altitude. After the course we head to Friendship peak, a spectacular mountain standing at an elevation of 5289m, is a part of the Pir Panjal range, in Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh. Facing several other peaks like Hanuman Tibba, Shitidhar, Indra Asan and Deo Tibba, the summit of this peak offers spectacular panoramic views of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges with the Beas Kund basin enhancing the beauty of the panorama. Climbing Friendship does not require any prior training & experience in mountaineering although the climb to the summit is quite steep and also requires use of crampons at certain points hence it surely requires good fitness.

Itinerary

Show Detailed Itinerary
The journey starts with boarding the overnight Volvo from Himanchal Bhawan near Mandi house in Delhi. The departure time of the bus is generally between 5:00pm to 6:30 pm so all the participants are expected to report by 5:00 pm at Himanchal Bhawan. Overnight Bus.
We reach Manali early in the morning. An hour’s drive from here takes us to our hotel at Solang. Morning is at leisure and post afternoon we go for a short acclimatization walk to the village of Solang & back. Overnight at Hotel.
A short trek through green meadows and forest leads us to Dhundi Camp. Today we learn to pitch our tents and about camp management. Post lunch we are introduced to some basic mountaineering equipment and their usage along with some basic mountaineering knots. Overnight at Camp
We spend the whole day on the slopes near base camp practicing movement on snow. Emphasis is laid on ascending & descending using toe-kicking & edging techniques. The instructors help participants get the body position & body balance right. By the end of the day enable them to go on steep snow slopes confidently. Overnight at camp.
Today also the day is spent on the slopes learning application of all ice axe positions and learning to arrest your fall. Since self-arrest requires people to slide down slopes in different body positions before arresting the fall it becomes a fun activity. Normally participants end up practicing a lot as it gives them opportunity to slide down the snow slopes. Overnight at camp.
Today we learn the use of rope and how we can move safely on the slopes as small teams. We learn how to belay each other and how to arrest the fall of the fellow climbers. Overnight at camp.
This day we do height gain, idea is to go up to high point using the various techniques we have learnt in the previous days. On the way back instructors would also show how to set up anchors on snow slopes and techniques to descend and rappel down on steep sections. Overnight at camp.
On the last day we have an opportunity to revisit & practice what we have learnt during the whole course. It is like a free day wherein one can spend some more time on one's weak areas.
We start walking on the trail following the river upstream towards the river base. We cross the river through a makeshift log bridge below the snout of the river and then a steep ascent through lateral moraine leads us to the base of the peak.
The day is free for acclimatization and we will ferry our loads up to the advance base camp on the mountain.
We have another free to adjust ourselves to the altitude and to ferry our loads to establish an Advance Base Camp.
Today we will ferry our final loads and we shift to the Advance Base Camp.
Summit Day! We start at midnight for our summit attempt of the Friendship Peak. The climb is steep through scree and moraine before getting onto snow to reach the summit rewarding us with spectacular panoramic views of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges. Later on the day descend back to the base camp. A long day of about 10 hrs.
We have a spare to deal with the contingencies like bad weather, tough snow conditions, poor health of someone etc.
After breakfast we descend back to Solang village and later we drive to Manali to catch the overnight Volvo to Delhi. We get an hour or so in Manali to buy souvenirs etc. from Manali before boarding the overnight Volvo.

What to expect

On a Technical Trek the average day could involve more than 7 hrs of walking.  These trips might cover difficult and glaciated terrain where use of ropes and technical mountaineering equipment like crampons, harness, carabiners, descenders etc could come into play. On these trips one is required to stay at high altitudes for lengthy periods of time and hence  acclimatization is always a big concern. These treks can also throw a bit of surprise largely because of unpredictable nature of the terrain and the snow/ ice conditions in the high mountains and hence we always have a contingency day of two built into the plan.

These trips would last more than two weeks and go to wild, remote places completely cut off from civilization. Trekking peaks also come under the same category as the level of technicality required to climb a trekking peak is similar.
