The Har-ki-dun valley is located at an altitude of 3566m in the western most corner of the Garhwal Himalayas. Har-ki-dun & Ruinsara are both small rivers which join to form river Supin which in turn joins the Rupin to form river Tons. Tons is the major tributary of river Yamuna. In this trek we explore both Har-ki-dun and Ruinsara valleys each of which is distinct in its own way. The trek starts from the village of Sankri and takes you through jungles of olive green pine trees and the most pristine parts of Govind Pashu Vihar National Park and Sanctuary. At lower altitudes the trail passes through some remote villages, which have their own unique culture. Their language is quite different then the rest of Garhwal and their wooden houses have a very distinct architecture. At the higher reaches of these valleys we have beautiful meadows surrounded by snow capped mountains. Some of the major peaks which we can see on this trek are Kalanag (6387m), Banderpunch (6316) and Swargarohini (6252m).

Itinerary

Show Detailed Itinerary
Arrive Dehradun airport and transfer to a hotel in Dehradun/ Mussoorie. Overnight Hotel
Its a long day's drive and we start after an early breakfast for Sankri. The drive goes up into the Yamuna valley and then crosses a pass at Jarmola to enter the Tons valley. We follow the Tons river till Netwar where its tributaries Rupin & Supin meet. From here we follow the Supin valley to get to the village of Sankri. We spend the night at a guest house in Sankri. Overnight at guest house.
We drive from Sankri to Taluka ( 1 hr) and trek 3-4 hrs to Khapu Thach (2050m). The drive is accompanied by lush green forests, fields and apple orchards. From Taluka we have a short descent to the Supin river after which we follow a beautiful forest trail next to the river for an hour to reach a small meadow of Bhedaka. A steep climb for an hour brings us to the large village of Datmir from where our camp is a couple of hours away. Overnight at camp.
We wake up early in the morning and trek to Kalkati Dhar which is a beautiful campsite beyond Osla, the last village in the this valley. It is a flay walk for a couple of hours till Dharkot from where we descend again to the Supin river and later on cross it to start a gradual climb to Osla. Osla is a relatively large village with houses made of wood in traditional architecture. Overnight at camp.
After an early morning breakfast we hike up for a couple of hours to the Har-ki-Dun valley. The valley is surrounded by grassy meadows and offers a close up view of the Swargarohini massif. We explore the valley, have lunch and then descend to Dev Thach, another meadow where we camp for the night.
The walk is now all along the Ruinsara Gad (stream). This valley is far more secluded than Har-ki-Dun as there are no villages here and hence much more wild. The walk is gradual all the way up to lake but towards the end one starts to feel the effect of altitude. Throughout the walk we have the views of the the Black peak at the head of the valley. Ruinsara lake (3630m) is a small lake which has dried up a lot in the recent years. It is surrounded by meadows and rhododendron bushes and is a beautiful and a peaceful setting for a camp. Overnight at camp.
We have a relaxed breakfast and we soak in the views and explore the area.
Its an easy and gradual descent down to Dev Thach campsite.
This is the last day of the trek. We head down to the starting point of the trek, the village of Taluka. From here we take the jeep back to Sankri. Overnight at guest house.
Drive back to Dehradun, we finish the trip at the airport. People with late evening connections 7PM or later can fly back the same day. Others can stay at Mussoorie/ Dehradun or Rishikesh.
