Everest Three Passes Trek is one of the most demanding treks in the Khumbu region. It is a long arduous traverse over three passes (all above 5000m) and links the distinct valleys of Bhotekoshi, Gokyo, Khumbu and Imja. The trek gets its name from the three high passes of Renjo la (5388 m), Cho La (5380 m) and Kongma La (5535 m) and offers opportunities to climb the famous viewpoint summits of Gokyo Ri (5483 m), Kalapathar (5545m) and Chukung Ri (5546 m). With a visit to the Everest Base Camp, this demanding trek gives you a complete experience of the Sherpa culture. We recommend the trek only for experienced trekkers!

Please Note: From 2024, we are offering the departure where you can purchase your own food at tea-houses and hence it is not a part of our package. The pricing too reflects this change in offering.

Itinerary

Show Detailed Itinerary
Arrive and transfer to hotel. We are introduced to our trek leader and other members of the tour. Overnight at hotel.
We will make an early morning flight to Lukla which takes around 25mins. Upon reaching Lukla we start our trek to Phakding, our destination for the night. The trekking trail from Lukla descends to Tharo Koshi, a small settlement by a stream. Then, you trek to Phakding (2804 meters) on an gradual uphill trail. Overnight at lodge.
We will trek for nearly seven hours to reach Namche Bazar (3440m), the famous market town of Solukhumbu. The trail crosses through several small settlements and Sherpa villages following the Dudh kosi upstream, to reach Monjo, the official entry in to the Sagarmatha National Park. The last part of todays trek is a steep uphill climb to Namche, but the beautiful sceneries on the way will make you forget your tiredness. Enroute we also cross the famous Tenzing Hillary Suspension Bridge. Overnight at lodge.
Namche bazaar nestles between a pair of ridges amid the towering pinnacles of Khumbu. Since ancient times Namche has been the business center of the Khumbu region, still keeping up its reputation as a trade and business place, Namche is the most happening place in the entire trek, lined up with small cafes, restaurants and pubs, souvenir and antiques shops, bookstores and stores selling clothing and mountaineering gear. You name it and Namche has it all. It is also the perfect place to rest and acclimatize before setting out any further on the trail. One gets spectacular views of Nupla (5885 m) and Khumbila (5703m) fro almost every corner of Namche. Overnight at lodge.
The way from Namche Bazar to Thame leads first to the west around the local gompa to a high point above the valley of Bhote Khosi . From here you get the views of Thamserku and Ama Dablam on the horizon, also of Kongde Ri directly above you and the glaciated ridge of Rolwaling. The path then gradually descends towards village Phurte (3390 m). The trail to the village is marked with lot of chortens and mani walls . After reaching Phurte this ascend to the bigger village Thamo (3440 m) which hosts another very famous monastery of the Everest region. The path continues ascending to a high point and then steeply descends down to the river, which pushes its way through very narrow gorge. From the bridge over Bothe Khosi we do a steep hike on a old glacial moraine and we reach the days destination in Thame (3800 m). Overnight at lodge.
The trail to Liungden is mostly uphill. We trek along an old trading route between Tibet and Namche Bazaar. We follow Bhote Khosi upstream and on the way we cross the small villages of Yilajung, Taranga, and Dinjung before reaching Lungden. Today is a short day, which further helps in the acclimatization. Overnight at lodge.
Just the day before we cross our first pass of the trek, we rest for a day at Liungden, making sure that everyone is well acclimatized before heading out to higher altitudes. Short walks during the day. Overnight at lodge
Today we start the day early in the morning to complete the long day’s trek ahead. There are several steep ascents and descents leading up to the final climb over the loose scree to the top of the pass. Along the way, we see Relama Tsho and Renjo Lake. Views from the Renjo La pass are much like that from Gokyo Ri with the third Gokyo Lake and Gokyo Village beneath the grey smear of the Ngozumpa Glacier. We also get outstanding views of Mt. Everest from the top of the pass. We descend down the trail along the Dudh Pokhari ( Lake) to the village of Gokyo. Overnight in Gokyo.
One of the highlight of our trek, the Gokyo Ri stands tall across the Dudh Phokri. Early morning we follow the trail that leads up to the summit of Gokyo peak or the Gokyo Ri. It is a 2-3 hour steep climb to the top but truly rewarding. Once described as the best view point in Nepal Himalaya, the summit of the Gokyo Ri truly offers such a panorama of the mighty Himalaya that we can hardly believe we are not dreaming. Surrounding us are Kusum Kanguru (6367m), Cho Oyu (8153 m), Gyangchung Kang (7922m), Lhotse (8501m), Makalu (8475 m), Cholatse (6440m), Taweche(6542m), Kantega (6685m), Thamserku (6808m), Lobuche (6145m) and Mt Everest (8848m) and hundreds of other unnamed peaks. Overnight in Gokyo.
Today is a short day . The walk is mostly across the moraine . We walk down towards the second lake before cross over the Ngozumpa glacier and climb up to the today's destination of Thangnak. Overnight in Thangnak.
Today after early breakfast we start off for Chola Pass (5368m). We cross over boulders and approach the pass along a steep path which sometimes may require scrambling. The path can be icy making the trail tricky and slippery. The top of the pass is marked by prayer flags and cairns. The scenery of majestic peaks on all directions is breathtaking. One gets the amazing views of Mt. Ama Dablam, Cholatse, Lobuche, and the village of Pheriche down below. The descent to Dzongla is steep and has to be negotiated around crevasses. Overnight in Dzongla
Today is a short day. We descend to the river and trek alongside above the Chola Lake. We enter into Khumbu valley and get then glimpses of Khumbu glacier and descend further to Lobuche. Overnight in Lobuche
The trail to Gorak Shep goes ahead through the lateral moraine of the Khumbu glacier. Climbing steeply up to the top through the torrent of Changri Glacier, we catch our first glimpse of Kala Patthar, a grey green knoll beneath Mt Pumori. As we reach Gorak Shep, we will find snow-capped mountains looming all around us including the top of the world – Mt Everest. After a brief lunch and rest at Gokekshep, we take the trail to Everest Base Camp through the once vast Gorak Shep Lake. Overnight at lodge.
Today we start early in the morning to catch the dramatic views from Kala Pathar and witness the first light of day caress the peaks of the mountains, particularly, Mt.Everest. However we need to be prepared for an early morning departure, amid pre-dawn darkness and cold temperatures (-10 to -15 deg C). Further, there is always the potential for chilly winds which are quite common. Overnight at lodge
Today we have an early start in the morning to reach the highest part of the entire trip which is Kongma La pass. We trek across the trail well marked on the Khumbu glacier to make the ascent for the pass. The path is steep which zig zags over the scree to the top. At the top of the pass, we are greeted by cairns and Buddhist prayer flags. We enter Imja valley and after a steep descent to Imja Khola, and then head down to Chhukung .Overnight at lodge.
Today we descend further down and join the main Everest trail and follow the Imja Khola and reach Debouche. Overnight at lodge.
We start our day walk following the Imja Khola and later a small climb brings us to Tangboche. Descend to cross the Dudh Kosi river and then have a steep ascent towards Namche which eases off as we get closer to the village. Overnight at lodge.
We have a steep downhill walk to Monja. From Monjo the trail descends the valley which becomes more enclosed as we pass the villages of Phakding and Chopling, to reach Chaurikharka. Here we begin the final climb of the trip - the sting in the tail - with a 45 minute steady ascent up to the airstrip at Lukla. Overnight at lodge.
Early morning we take the flight to Kathmandu. Evening free for sightseeing or shopping in the bazaar. Overnight at hotel.
Our services end after breakfast.

What to expect

A Challenging trek would typically last for about two weeks and will take you to altitudes above 5000m / 16,500ft. A routine day will have over 6 hours of hiking and will involve a great deal of ascending and descending on sparsely tread trails. The terrain will be varied on these treks and you can expect walking on moraines / boulder fields and cross small glaciers. Acclimatization is a concern, the itineraries are carefully planned and allow everyone to acclimatize to the increasing altitude. Exposure to cold temperatures is quite high on these treks, all participants are expected to have good quality equipment & clothing to enjoy these treks. A mix of wilderness, altitude, terrain and duration makes these treks challenging. The trek is Suited for people with high fitness levels looking for a challenge and capable of enduring two weeks in the outdoors.

Internal Flights: Please note that poor weather can cause delays on the flights on Kathmandu-Lukla sector. At the end of the trip you should book the afternoon flights out from Kathmandu which gives you a day against delay on the flight back from Lukla. Helicopters can sometimes fly when the scheduled fixed wing aircraft cannot. If your group is offered the opportunity to use a chartered helicopter, either flying up to Lukla or back to Kathmandu, the cost will be shared between those choosing to take this option. In the extremely unlikely event that flight cancellations cause you to miss your homeward international flight, we will render all assistance, but cannot be held liable for any extra costs incurred. You could explore having an insurance for your flight cancellations.
