The highest peak in the Kashmir Valley in India, Kolahoi was first climbed by Kenneth Mason and Dr.Ernest Neve as early as 1912. Post India's partition expeditions to the mountain had considerably reduced, hence it is not yet popular among climbers. While it may look like a relatively small mountain (by Himalayan standards) at 5425, the peak presents some challenging climbing routes which can be done in a short period and in complete seclusion. We approach the peak from Aru Valley near Pahalgam and establish Base Camp at DhudhSar lake (3750m). Above base camp, we navigate mixed terrain - boulder-strewn glacier, a vast snowfield, and rock and ice slopes, before the final push to the summit from the North-East ridge. Kashmir's exquisite beauty, an interesting mix of terrain and the isolated location of the peak all combine to make the Kolahoi Climb a must-do for both aspiring climbers and seasoned mountaineers.
