Markha Valley is one of the most popular treks in Ladakh and here is a trek which combines the beauty of Markha valley and also the wilderness of Zalung Karpo La to make a quintessential Ladakh adventure. We take a deviation from the traditional Markha Valley trek route which exits out of Kongmaru La and instead goes behind the Kang Yatze massif and exit via the Zalung Karpo La pass, a 5197m high pass which is pristine and wild. The trek concludes at Debring on the Manali - Leh highway at the base of Taglang La. As Ladakh becomes more popular and its trails busy, Zalung Karpo La is a rare opportunity for those who want to experience the wild side of Ladakh, witness villages still unreachable by roads and interact with people untouched by modernity.

Show Detailed Itinerary
The flight takes us over the Greater Himalayas and makes an exciting landing at one of the highest airports in the world. Transfer to hotel. Overnight at hotel.
Visit the famous monasteries of Shey & Thiksey. Back to hotel for lunch. Overnight at hotel.
We start early in the morning from Leh and drive by the Zanskar river all the way till Chilling bridge after which we deviate to enter the Markha Valley, driving through the village of Skiu until Sara where we start our trek. The day's trek is gentle, going by the Markha River, which we cross a couple of times. The landscape keeps changing as we climb and there is enough to keep one interested. Markha is a substantial village, complete with a derelict fort on the hillside and a small village monastery. Overnight Camp.
Kang Yatse (6400m), a magnificent snow-clad mountain commands the views on this day. A popular place to spot herds of blue sheep slide up and down the steep cliffs with incredible agility. Overnight Camp.
The next four days of the trek are the most beautiful ad we walk towards Kharnak valley which is not very often visited by trekkers. We traverse the slopes of Kangyatse mountain and the scenery becomes quite dramatic. We have the jagged mountains in front of us all the time while we walk on the rolling hill sides. After an initial uphill walk we skirt around the ridges to drop down to Langthang Chu, a tributary of Markha valley
Its an easy day and the main valley starts become narrower and the stream is smaller to cross which we have to do a few times. We camp at a grassy spot just before the pass.
We start a bit early today so as to reach Leh in comfortable time. We reach Dat, the road-head on the Manali-Leh Highway by lunch time and board over vehicles to reach Leh. Free evening to relax, shop and wind-down. Overnight Hotel
We drop you to the airport in the morning where we say good bye!

What to expect

A Challenging trek would typically last for about two weeks and will take you to altitudes above 5000m / 16,500ft. A routine day will have over 6 hours of hiking and will involve a great deal of ascending and descending on sparsely tread trails. The terrain will be varied on these treks and you can expect walking on moraines / boulder fields and cross small glaciers. Acclimatisation is a concern, the itineraries are carefully planned  and allow everyone to acclimatise to the increasing altitude. Exposure to cold temperatures is quite high on these treks, all participants are expected to have good quality equipment & clothing to enjoy these treks. A mix of wilderness, altitude, terrain and duration makes these treks challenging. The trek is Suited for people with high fitness levels looking for a challenge and capable of enduring two weeks in the outdoors.
