Hampta Pass is one of the most delightful treks in the Manali region. Deo Tibba at 6001m is a popular peak in the eastern Pir Panjal Range and Hampta Pass (4270m) used to be the traditional route between Kullu and Lahaul valleys. This trek takes us over the majestic foothills of the Himalayas, the Pir Panjal Range, crossing at Hampta Pass (4270m) to reach remote Lahaul - an isolated district of Himachal Pradesh. The barren landscape in the upper regions and the green valleys below make the trail awe-inspiring. Hampta pass offers scenic views of lush green valleys, towering snow-clad mountains, and hills. Leaving the Manali valley, the trek proceeds through forests of walnut, oak, the occasional alder and meadows to reach the base camp of Deo Tibba and then proceeds towards the Hampta Pass before descending to Chattru in the Lahaul Valley on the other side. This is a moderate trek that packs a lot into 8 days. NOTE: For pre-monsoon departures crossing of Hampta Pass may be difficult due to heavy snow conditions. The last 2 days of trek would then be changed to reach road-head via Chikka in the Hampta Valley.

What to expect

A trip graded as a Moderate Trek takes you to high altitude regions - above 3000m / 10,0000ft and will involve considerable altitude gain over the course of the trek. Altitude will have an effect, hence one would need to be careful about acclimatization. Moderate treks will have multiple days which involve considerable amount of ascents and descents  and would require walking for more than 6 hours. There might be a day or two of camping in relatively high altitudes above 4000m / 13,000ft. A typical trek will last around a week to ten days depending on the region and is a good step-up for people who have completed a beginner trek.

Good fitness levels are needed to enjoy these trips. Some training up before the trip would help. Prior trekking experience is desirable.
